In Madagascar: 118,000 newborns are born too early each year. 5,400 children under five die from complications directly related to premature birth. The neonatal mortality rate in Madagascar was 24‰ live births according to the EDSMD IV (Madagascar Demographic and Health Survey) of 2008-2009. This rate rose to 26‰ live births according to the EDSMD V of 2021. The main cause of neonatal mortality, representing 38% of causes, is prematurity.

SUPPORT THE PREMATURE ® intervenes early in the lives of premature infants, future adults, through activities that allow them to acquire all the capacities to take part in sustainable socio-economic development, to live in dignity, and to benefit equitably from well-being.

Our actions aim:

  • to reduce neonatal and infant mortality, thereby contributing to achieving SDG target 3.2(1)
  • to reduce the risks of immediate and late complications related to prematurity
  • to reduce the burden on parents related to prematurity
  • to prevent and reduce human suffering (2)

Our activities are based on preventing early births, supporting the most vulnerable premature infants, and preventing the complications they may experience. To consolidate these activities, we are working to introduce family-centered care for premature babies in neonatal units. Upon their discharge from the hospital, multidisciplinary outpatient care will allow for the prevention and treatment of short- and long-term complications.
